Inhibitory effects of Schizandra chinensis extracts on the growth and adsorption to saliva-coated HA beads of some oral bacteria

Abstract
Schizandra chinensis has been used as a traditional soft drink and as an ingredient in herbal medicine or oriental medicine. The purpose of this study was to examine the inhibitory effects of Schizandra chmensis extracts on the growth of mutans streptococci, lactobacilli, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Capnocytophaga spp. and on the adsorption to saliva-coated hydroxyapatite beads of mutans streptococci in vitro. The strains of mutans streptococci tested were Streptococcus mutans KCTC 3065 strain, S. sobrinus KCTC 3308 strain, S. rattus KCTC 3294 strain, and S, cricetus KCTC 3292 strain. Those of lactobacilli tested were Lactobacillus oris KCTC 3502 strain, L. acidophilus KCTC 3111 strain, L. casei KCTC 2180 strain, and L. animalis KCTC 3501 strain. Those of Capnocytophaga spp, tested were C. ochracea ATCC 27872 strain, C. sputigena ATCC 33612 strain, and C. gingivalis ATCC 33624 strain. It was found that the minimal inhibitory concentrations(MIC) of the Schizandra chinensis extracts was 50mg /xri on the all tested oral bacteria except the strains of lactobacilli. The MIC of all the 4 strains of lactobacilli were 200 mg/mil, The Schizandra chinensis extracts inhibited the growth of all tested oral bacteria from 90% to 98% at the concentration of 5 mg/ml, except for C. sputigena ATCC 33612 strain, S. cricetus KCTC 3292 strain, L. acidophilus KCTC 3111 strain, L. casei KCTC 2180 strain. The growth of all tested oral bacteria except for S. mutans KCTC 3065 and L. animalis KCTC 350lstrain were effectively inhibited at the concentration of 5 mg/ml of the Schizandra chinensis extracts after 120 minutes incubation. The adsorption to the saliva-coated hydroxyapatite beads of S. mutans KCTC 3065 strain, S. sobrinus KCTC 3308 strain, SS rattus KCTC 3294 strain, and S. cricetus KCTC 3292 strain was 57%, 38%, 42%, and 34% respectively at the concentration of 15 mg/ml.

These results indicate that the Schirandra chinensis extracts inhibited the growth and adsorption to saliva coated hydroxyapatite beads of some oral bacteria effectively, and can be used as a possible preventive agents of dental caries and/or periodontitis.
